Raimundo Ferrero, Technical Chief at Agrícola CV S.P.A., oversees two fields of table grapes and vinifera in the O'Higgins and Maule regions. These fields, totaling 250 hectares, were planted in 2013 and 2020. The operation uses a double-line drip irrigation system with a precipitation rate of 1.9 mm per hour, and the irrigation is managed with a Dropcontrol system. The management also incorporates soil moisture sensors, climate monitoring, and the expert guidance of CDTEC

Double-line drip irrigation with DropControl irrigation control and soil moisture sensors

As a farmer, we needed to replace our old crop varieties. With the help of CDTEC, we've been able to better manage our new crops, specifically through their irrigation expertise, field visits, training, and the use of their probes and the Dropcontrol platform. This has allowed us to understand the root behavior of the new varieties, resulting in more effective water management.
Without telemetry, we would have assumed that a day with rain meant no irrigation was necessary. However, thanks to the soil moisture probe, we can see exactly how deep a 10 mm rain reaches. This data helps us determine if we actually need to irrigate, allowing for more precise water management.
The Dropcontrol weather tool provides a highly accurate weather forecast. It also allows us to create custom temperature alerts for frost control and set up humidity alerts for the probes to protect their electronic components from damage.
