Villa Creek Farm
Jim Miller
At Villa Creek Farm in Cayucos, Jim Miller has built his avocado and citrus operation around informed decision making. He planted the property in 2019 and soon realized that staying ahead of water needs would be essential. In 2021 he installed WiseConn to track water use and control his pumps remotely, giving him the flexibility to irrigate from anywhere. With soil moisture data guiding his schedule, he now uses less water, sees stronger tree performance, and produces steady yields without alternate bearing. Jim points to WiseConn as a key part of that success.

Monitoring and control
Project Details:
- Crop Type: Avocados, Citrus
- Location: Cayucos, CA
- Irrigation System Type: Automated Drip Irrigation
I’ve learned that I’m using less water than I ever have, thanks to soil moisture sensor monitoring. I’ve set alerts in my DropControl app to let me know when moisture drops to 12 or 24 inches, so I can irrigate right when the
Project Goals:
- Soil moisture monitoring with set alerts on DropControl.
- Less overall water usage on the farm.
- Remote valve control for immediate start and end commands.
- Real-time, accurate data for irrigation planning, scheduling, and water reporting.
Recently we were out of town and had to stay longer than expected, so I grabbed my phone, opened the app, and was able to start irrigating the farm right away.
Results:
- Accurate soil moisture and weather data leading to improved tree health and growth.
- Easy remote irrigation control through the DropControl app.
- Year-over-year avocado yield increases with no alternate bearing.
- Reduced overall water use on the farm.
- Simple irrigation analytics to support local water reporting requirements.
